The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has opened an inquiry into reports suggesting that its airstrike carried out on 11 April 2026 may have struck a local market in Jilli, Borno State, resulting in civilian casualties. The Service reiterated its commitment to safeguarding civilian lives and upholding accountability in all operations.
In a statement, the Director of Public Relations and Information, Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, said the Service places all allegations of civilian harm under serious consideration, stressing that the protection of innocent lives remains central to its operational conduct.
“The Service treats all reports of possible civilian harm with the utmost seriousness and empathy, as the protection of innocent lives remains central to all NAF operations,” he stated.
He further explained that the Chief of Air Staff has ordered the immediate deployment of the Civilian Harm Accident and Investigation Cell (CHAI-Cell) to the affected area to conduct a thorough fact-finding investigation into the claims.
According to him, the Nigerian Air Force remains committed to professionalism, transparency, and accountability in the execution of its missions, and will collaborate with relevant authorities as well as local stakeholders to establish the facts surrounding the incident.
While investigations are ongoing, the Service appealed to the public and media organisations to avoid speculation and allow the process to be concluded without prejudice.
The Nigerian Air Force reassured citizens of its continued dedication to national security and the protection of civilian lives, adding that all credible concerns would be addressed with the seriousness and diligence they deserve.
