President Bola Tinubu has held talks with the European Union’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas, with both sides expressing readiness to deepen collaboration in security, trade, and strategic commodities.
Kallas, who led an EU delegation to the President’s Lagos residence, told journalists after the meeting that Nigeria and the EU remain “like-minded partners” committed to strengthening cooperation amid a complex global landscape.
“We are very like-minded partners, the European Union and Nigeria, and today we explored new ways to collaborate,” she said. “The global security situation is very serious, as the geopolitical picture shows. That’s why those countries that value the international rules-based space system must stick together.”
She explained that discussions covered a range of areas, including investment, trade, critical raw materials, and enhanced engagement on security and cybersecurity.
“We talked today with the ministers about different topics. On issues of investment and trade, and there could be more. The second is critical raw materials… and also in terms of security and cybersecurity issues, where we can cooperate even more,” she added.
In a statement, the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Mr Bayo Onanuga, said President Tinubu reiterated Nigeria’s commitment to strengthening ties with the EU and welcomed the bloc’s ongoing support.
The meeting had in attendance the National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, and the Minister of Budget and National Planning, Senator Abubakar Atiku Bagudu.
