Oyo State to Mark 50 Years with Grand Festivities

The Oyo State Government has announced a week-long programme to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the state’s creation. Sources also indicate that Governor Seyi Makinde is expected to grant pardons to deserving inmates as part of the Golden Jubilee festivities.

Speaking to journalists at the Governor’s Office Briefing Room, Agodi Secretariat, Ibadan, Hon. Saheed Akinade-Fijabi, former member of the House of Representatives and Chairman of the Oyo @ 50 Anniversary Committee, said the events will highlight the best of Oyo State while honouring five decades of unity, resilience, and peace.

Akinade-Fijabi outlined that the programme includes a series of activities such as religious services, cultural exhibitions, award and dinner nights, and a public lecture titled “Consolidating the Legacy, Navigating the Present, and Reimagining the Future.” He noted that the schedule was designed to blend reflection, thanksgiving, intellectual discourse, and cultural celebration, reflecting Governor Makinde’s forward-looking vision.

The week of festivities will kick off on January 26 with the Governor’s address at the International Conference Centre, University of Ibadan, and will conclude on February 3 with a dinner event honouring distinguished citizens and contributors to the state’s development. Other planned activities include health outreach programmes across the 33 local government areas, film screenings in the six geo-political zones, a carnival, symposiums, lectures, sports competitions, and empowerment initiatives for women.

Answering questions from reporters, Akinade-Fijabi said the celebrations will extend throughout the year, with many projects completed as part of the anniversary. He assured that non-indigenes who have contributed to the state’s progress will also be recognised. Awards will be presented to individuals from diverse sectors, and a Hall of Fame will soon be inaugurated at the State Secretariat to preserve and showcase Oyo’s historical achievements since its creation.

Highlighting the inclusivity of the event, the Committee Chairman noted that invitations have been sent to citizens, friends, and stakeholders from around the world. He stressed that the Golden Jubilee is a celebration of the state itself, not any political party, with attendees expected from across different political affiliations.

Oyo State was formed on 3 February 1976, carved out from the former Western Region of Nigeria, with Ibadan serving as its administrative capital.
