The Nigerian Government has strongly condemned the military coup that has disrupted constitutional governance in the Republic of Guinea-Bissau.

In a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson in Abuja, Kimiebi Ebienfa, the government expressed “profound dismay and deep concern” over the unconstitutional seizure of power.

According to the statement, Nigeria described the coup as “a grave act of insurrection that undermines democratic progress, stability, and constitutional order not only in Guinea-Bissau but across the West African sub-region.”

The government reiterated that such actions contravene the ECOWAS Protocol on Democracy and Good Governance, which explicitly rejects any form of unconstitutional rise to power.

Nigeria affirmed its solidarity with the people of Guinea-Bissau and called for “the immediate and unconditional restoration of constitutional rule.”

The statement highlighted the need to protect all individuals detained during the crisis and to safeguard democratic institutions.

It further urged authorities in Guinea-Bissau to ensure “the safety of all election observers currently in the country on official duties.”

Nigeria appealed to all parties to exercise restraint, engage in peaceful dialogue, and respect the will of the people as reflected in the electoral process and official announcement of results by the electoral management body.

Warning that those responsible for the coup would be held accountable, the government stressed that such actions risk “plunging the country into instability and reversing hard-earned democratic gains.”

As a key member of ECOWAS and the African Union, Nigeria pledged to collaborate with regional and international partners to ensure a swift return to normalcy and constitutional governance in Guinea-Bissau.

The statement reaffirmed Nigeria’s unwavering commitment to promoting democracy, peace, and stability across Africa.
