UN Appoints Nigerian physicist Prof. Rabia Sa’id to Nuclear Panel

In a landmark development, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has appointed Nigerian physicist Professor Rabia Sa’id to a newly established global independent scientific panel tasked with evaluating the catastrophic consequences of nuclear war.

This appointment places Nigeria at the heart of a major international initiative addressing the future of global peace, health, and security.

The 21-member panel, made up of eminent experts from across the world, was formed in the wake of General Assembly Resolution 79/238, titled Nuclear War Effects and Scientific Research.”

The group is charged with delivering the most far-reaching scientific assessment in decades on the potential physical and societal effects of nuclear conflict  from local to global scales  including disruptions to climate, environmental degradation, radiological fallout, and socio-economic impacts.

Professor Sa’id, an esteemed atmospheric and space-weather physicist at Bayero University, Kano, and co-founder of Nigeria’s Association of Women Physicists, is expected to contribute critical African and Nigerian perspectives to the panel’s work. Her specialisation in atmospheric sciences will be central to analysing post-nuclear environmental and climatic changes.

Her appointment marks a significant milestone for Nigeria, affirming the country’s expanding role in global scientific diplomacy and peacebuilding efforts. She joins a distinguished group of scientists representing disciplines such as nuclear physics, radiation studies, climate and environmental science, public health, agriculture, and economics from 21 countries.

The panel is expected to present its comprehensive report to the 82nd session of the United Nations General Assembly in 2027. The findings will provide the international community with vital scientific insights into the long-term consequences of nuclear war nearly four decades after the UN’s last major report on the issue in 1988.

In line with the resolution, the panel’s composition reflects global geographical diversity and gender balance. Professor Sa’id’s inclusion serves as a testament to Nigeria’s growing scientific reputation and its steadfast commitment to global peace.

The Secretary-General emphasised that the panel will engage widely with international organisations, civil society, and local communities to ensure regional concerns are reflected in the final report.

Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has welcomed the appointment, describing it as “a significant acknowledgement of Nigeria’s role in shaping a safer, more secure global future.”

Reacting to the news, Professor Sa’id expressed pride in representing her country, saying: “Africa must have a seat at the table when global security and the survival of humanity are at stake.”

Other panel members include experts from Brazil, Mexico, Argentina, the United Kingdom, South Korea, Kazakhstan, Austria, Australia, South Africa, Japan, Turkey, China, and more  reflecting a rich diversity of knowledge and perspective.

At a time when global nuclear tensions are once again in sharp focus, Nigeria’s inclusion in this crucial scientific initiative reinforces its longstanding commitment to disarmament and a world free from the threat of nuclear conflict.
