Manchester City moved to the summit of the Women’s Super League for the first time this season, edging past Everton 2‑1 in a hard-fought match on Sunday.
Vivianne Miedema opened the scoring for City in the first half, marking her 90th WSL goal, before Kelly Gago equalised for Everton. City regained the lead in the 55th minute when Khadija Shaw headed home the winner.
The victory capped a perfect weekend for manager Andree Jeglertz’s side, who benefited from slip-ups by title rivals Chelsea and Manchester United. Chelsea were held 1‑1 by Arsenal, while Manchester United suffered their first league defeat of the season, losing 1‑0 at home to Aston Villa.

City now sit atop the table with 21 points from eight games, one ahead of second-placed Chelsea and four clear of third-placed Manchester United.
Shaw reflected on the tough contest, saying, “Everton made it very difficult and we didn’t help ourselves seems like that’s how we’ve been going all season. The difference is we just tried to get the job done. At the end of the day, the three points are all that matters, and I think we ground out that win.”
Everton dropped to 10th, just four points above the relegation play-off zone.
