MKO Abiola-Inspired Play 'Kashimawo' Set for London Debut

Theatre company DOSF-UK is set to make its international debut with Kashimawo, a historical production that brings Nigerian history to European and diaspora audiences.

In a statement issued on Wednesday in Lagos, DOSF-UK Director Chantal Edgar revealed that the play draws inspiration from the life of the late Nigerian businessman and politician, Moshood Abiola, widely known as MKO. She added that the production aims to celebrate his memory and honour his political legacy.

According to Edgar, Kashimawo explores Abiola’s life and political struggles, weaving them into a compelling narrative.

“Kashimawo is the second in a series of historical expositions created to take these stories to Europe and the diaspora. Its beauty lies in its broad scope  from the inspiring life of MKO, who motivated the work, to the playful mischief of the gods, seemingly engaged in a different kind of game with the life of this ‘poor orphan’,” she said.

The play, backed by Mr Kola Abiola, son of the late statesman, is produced by actress and producer Tayo Elesin under the Elesin Productions banner.

Directed by Prof Rasaki Ojo, the production will feature veteran actor Biodun Abbey in the lead role, supported by an international cast.

Kashimawo will premiere internationally in London on 4 and 5 October.

The production was first staged in Lagos on 31 March and 1 April 2024, under the banner of the Duke of Shomolu Foundation, with direction also by Prof Rasaki Ojo Bakare.
