In a move to enhance child safety online, YouTube has announced the rollout of an artificial intelligence-powered age-detection system aimed at identifying teen users and applying additional protections, regardless of the age they declare on their profiles.
Beginning August 13, 2025, the new system will launch in the United States as part of a pilot programme. According to YouTube, the AI tool will analyse various signals including search and viewing patterns, content engagement habits, and the age of a user’s account to estimate whether a user is likely under 18. If flagged, the platform will automatically apply stricter safeguards associated with teen accounts.
These safety measures include disabling personalised advertising, limiting exposure to sensitive content (such as videos related to body image or social aggression), and enabling features like screen time reminders and privacy nudges. These settings are designed to reduce the risk of harmful experiences for younger audiences.
“YouTube has a responsibility to protect young people, even if they misreport their age when signing up,” the company said in a blog post. “This update allows us to extend our protections to more teens by using technology to estimate age more accurately.”

Importantly, users who believe they have been misclassified by the AI will have the option to verify their age manually, using a government-issued ID, a credit card, or a live selfie. YouTube said that while the verification process may feel intrusive, it will be optional and used only to override AI-based estimates.
The initiative is part of a broader industry trend responding to increasing regulatory scrutiny. In recent years, governments and watchdogs across Europe and North America have called for stricter enforcement of child safety measures on social media platforms. The UK’s Online Safety Act, for example, mandates more robust age verification systems for online services that cater to or are likely to be accessed by minors.
For content creators, the change could affect audience reach and advertising revenue. Since personalised ads which generally attract higher returns will be restricted for flagged underage users, some creators may see lower monetisation metrics.
YouTube says it will closely monitor the effectiveness of the programme and user feedback before extending it to other countries. The company views the AI system as a significant step towards building a safer digital environment for young users, particularly in cases where age-based settings might otherwise be bypassed.
The YouTube’s age-detection system could become a model for other tech companies seeking to meet evolving safety standards in the digital age.
