Tinubu Returns to Nigeria After 15-Day Diplomatic Tour

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu returned to Abuja in the early hours of Sunday following a 15-day diplomatic tour of Saint Lucia and Brazil aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s global partnerships.

He arrived at the Presidential Wing of the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport around 1:30 a.m. and was warmly received by senior government officials and members of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). Those present included National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu, Minister of Budget and Economic Planning Abubakar Bagudu, Minister of State for Defence Bello Matawalle, Senator Aliyu Wamakko, Minister of State for Works Muhammad Goronyo, and presidential aide Kabiru Masari, among others.

President Tinubu had departed Nigeria on June 28 for a strategic diplomatic mission aimed at expanding Nigeria’s international engagements, particularly with historically underrepresented regions.

His first stop was Saint Lucia, where he made a landmark visit to deepen ties with the Caribbean nation. While there, he held talks with leaders of the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS), signalling Nigeria’s renewed interest in Caribbean diplomacy and South-South cooperation.

The President then proceeded to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, where he participated in the 17th BRICS Summit at the invitation of Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. A day before the summit, both leaders co-chaired the Nigeria-Brazil High-Level Bilateral Meeting, focusing on boosting trade, infrastructure financing, and cultural collaboration between the two nations.

Addressing the summit as leader of a BRICS partner nation, President Tinubu called for a reformed global governance system particularly in finance and healthcare to better serve the interests of developing and emerging economies. He emphasized equitable access to climate financing and sustainable technology transfers, especially for African nations burdened disproportionately by climate change despite contributing minimally to global emissions.

He also spotlighted regional initiatives like the African Carbon Market Initiative and the Great Green Wall while reaffirming Nigeria’s domestic reforms in renewable energy, urban development, and healthcare.

President Tinubu’s presence at the summit marked Nigeria’s official debut as a BRICS partner nation, following its inclusion in January alongside Belarus, Bolivia, Cuba, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Thailand, Uganda, and Uzbekistan.

The trip underscored Nigeria’s growing diplomatic profile and President Tinubu’s commitment to strengthening South-South cooperation and enhancing Nigeria’s voice in global affairs.
