The Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 election, Mr. Peter Obi, stated that a single four-year term is sufficient for any dedicated and sincere leader to make a significant impact in Nigeria.
In a statement released on Monday in Abuja by Peter Obi’s media spokesman, Ibrahim Umar, Obi emphasized that a four-year single term, especially in 2027, would honor zoning arrangements and help stabilize the political landscape.
He said, “One term is enough to prove that good governance is achievable. If negative impacts can occur in just two years, then positive changes can certainly be made in four years.
“This also respects the gentleman’s agreement on zoning, which, while not enshrined in our constitution, has been a stabilizing factor.
“I don’t need more than four years. I will demonstrate the path to good governance.
“People want to wake up and see a president who genuinely cares and shows compassion, and two years is enough time to set that in motion.”
Reaffirming his intention to run for president again in 2027, Obi declared, “I am running for the office of President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, and I believe I am qualified.”
Addressing rumors about the possibility of him becoming former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar’s running mate in 2027, Obi stated, “That’s not under consideration; no one has discussed that with me. People assume many things, but no conversation has taken place about me being A, B, or C.”

He also dismissed speculation that he had left the Labour Party following his support for a coalition that includes the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Regarding alliances with individuals who played significant roles in past administrations, Obi explained that their experience is crucial to preventing the failure of the government he aims to establish.
He noted, “Their expertise is essential. One of the world’s leading companies hired two former employees of failed companies because they understand what caused those failures.
“You need the insights of those who have both failed and succeeded to move forward, and I welcome everyone.
“This experience is vital because they understand what can cause a system to collapse and what went wrong previously.”
