Tonobok Okowa Clinches Second Term as AFN President

Tonobok Okowa was on Thursday re-elected unopposed as President of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) by a majority vote of the congress held at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja, under the supervision of the National Sports Commission (NSC).

In addition to Okowa’s re-election, Ladan Zurmi emerged as the 1st Vice-President, while Chineze Akuchukwu was elected 2nd Vice-President. All will serve a four-year term.

Following his victory, Okowa reaffirmed his commitment to the development of Nigerian athletes and coaches, assuring stakeholders of his readiness to elevate Nigerian athletics to global standards.

“This mandate is more than a personal achievement; it is a renewed pledge to the future of Nigerian athletics,” he said. “To every delegate who voted, whether for me or my fellow aspirants, I offer my heartfelt thanks.

“Our journey in the next four years must be built on unity. Athletics is not a solo sprint but a relay. Every stakeholder athletes, coaches, administrators, and fans must work together, passing the baton with trust.”

He called for an end to division, urging everyone to focus on a collective goal: a Nigeria known globally for sporting excellence, integrity, and unity.

Okowa reiterated that his leadership would continue to rest on five core pillars: Talent and Youth Development, Technical Excellence, Anti-Doping, Uncompromising Integrity, and Safeguarding.

He also pledged to prioritise athlete development and capacity building for coaches.

“To our athletes, you are the heartbeat of this Federation. We will support your dreams with the same passion you bring to the track.

“You can expect improved training facilities, access to sports science, insurance cover, mental health support, and dignified remuneration.”

Addressing coaches and technical personnel, Okowa added, “Your expertise drives our success. We will invest in your growth and recognise your critical contributions.”

Other members of the new AFN board include Gabriel Okon, Samuel Okikeku, Fatima Yusuf-Olukoju, Frank Atare, Lekan Soetan, Adamu Babayo, Oluyomi Sule, and Victor Okorie.

Honorary co-opted board members are Nneka Anibueze (Chief Operating Officer), Dele Edokpayi (Legal Adviser), Kolawale Oredipe (Auditor), and Babajide Odedeji (Safeguarding Officer).
