Babajide Akeredolu, President of the Nigeria American Football Association (NAFA), has expressed gratitude for Nigeria’s inclusion in the 2026 IFAF Flag Football World Championships.
Akeredolu told newsmen that the International Federation of American Football (IFAF) had extended an invitation for Nigeria to represent Africa at the global event.
He described the opportunity as a historic step in the growth of flag football in Nigeria and a significant milestone for the continent. He urged Nigerians to celebrate the announcement and support the national teams on their journey to Düsseldorf, Germany, from 13 to 16 August 2026.
Akeredolu said the teams would proudly showcase Nigeria’s talent, spirit, and resilience on the international stage during the competition.

“Today, IFAF, in partnership with the NFL and the City of Düsseldorf, officially named Düsseldorf as host for the 2026 Flag Football Championships.
“We’re proud to confirm that Nigeria will field both men’s and women’s teams, competing against the world’s best in flag football,” he said.
He added that the tournament marks a defining moment for the sport, its players, and Nigeria’s global sporting profile.
“As the spotlight shines on Düsseldorf next year, our teams will compete with passion, representing Nigeria with pride and resilience,” Akeredolu noted.
He extended his appreciation to Hon. Olawande Ayodele, Minister for Youth Development and Chairman of the Flag Football Development Board.
Akeredolu also thanked Mallam Shehu Dikko, Chairman of the National Sports Commission, and Chief Bukola Olopade, Director-General, for their steadfast support.
He recognised their contributions as vital to advancing NAFA’s vision and promoting the sport nationally.
The NAFA President further acknowledged the support of NFL Africa, NFL Flag, and Browns Nigeria franchises. He said their strategic partnership has been instrumental in the successful rollout of flag football programmes across Nigeria.
