In commemoration of  World Ocean Day 2025, a non-governmental organisation, Lagos Beach Cleaners, has called on residents of Badagry to embrace environmental responsibility as a means of protecting marine ecosystems.

The appeal was made during a beach cleanup exercise held on Monday at Gberefu Beach in Badagry, organised to commemorate this year World Ocean Day 2025, celebrated globally on 8 June.

Founder of the organisation, Mr Israel Bonu, explained that the initiative was designed to raise awareness about the dangers of plastic pollution to marine life and coastal communities, while encouraging sustainable environmental practices.

“Our goal is to inspire a new culture of environmental responsibility, where every individual understands their role in protecting marine ecosystems,” said Bonu, an environmental advocate.

He expressed gratitude to the volunteers and local community members who participated in the exercise, describing their support as vital to the group’s mission.

Bonu further noted that World Ocean Day provides a valuable opportunity to reflect on the health of the oceans and take meaningful action to safeguard them.

He said Lagos Beach Cleaners was established with the mission of preserving Lagos State’s coastal environment through regular cleanups, environmental education, and community engagement.

Also speaking at the event, the foundation’s Director of Media, Dr Sewhude Akande, emphasised that the exercise was not just about clearing litter but about fostering long-term commitment to ocean conservation.

The cleanup concluded with a short sensitisation session, during which participants were reminded of the harmful consequences of indiscriminate waste disposal and the need to minimise the use of single-use plastics.

World Ocean Day is observed annually to highlight the critical role oceans play in sustaining life on Earth and to encourage global efforts to protect marine environments.
