The Federal Government has approved the upgrade of Victor Attah Airport in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, to a full-fledged international airport, the Minister of Aviation, Festus Keyamo, announced on Thursday.
Keyamo said the approval followed a formal request from Governor Umo Eno, who cited the recent expansion of the airport’s terminal building, the near-completion of the Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) facility, and the international-standard runway as key factors. He also highlighted the airport’s strategic location in relation to Central and East Africa.
“The Governor had specifically requested the Federal Government to designate the Victor Attah Airport, Uyo as an international airport. Considering the massive terminal upgrades, the nearly-completed MRO, the international length of the runway, and its strategic location, we approved the request,” Keyamo said via his verified social media account.
He added that in the coming months, the Federal Government will collaborate with relevant agencies, including Customs, Immigration, NDLEA, Quarantine, and the Police, to finalise arrangements for international flights to commence operations from Victor Attah International Airport.
The upgrade is expected to boost regional connectivity, enhance trade, and position Uyo as a key aviation hub in southern Nigeria.
