The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced the creation of an Artificial Intelligence (AI) Division within its ICT Department.

This move aims to enhance Nigeria’s electoral integrity, efficiency, and innovation.

The decision was made during INEC’s weekly meeting in Abuja, following extensive consultations on AI’s global and African impact on elections.

Sam Olumekun, National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, explained that the increasing role of AI in elections calls for a dedicated unit to manage its risks and benefits.

He noted that while AI poses challenges like fake news and content manipulation, it also offers opportunities for data-driven decisions, risk management, automated voter services, and logistical support through geo-spatial intelligence.

The new division will centralise INEC’s AI initiatives to improve decision-making, voter engagement, and the credibility of elections.

Olumekun said, “This division places INEC at the forefront of integrating AI into electoral management and forms part of our ongoing reforms.”

He added that the AI Division will better coordinate current technology investments and guard against AI misuse, enhancing election transparency and credibility.

INEC reaffirmed its commitment to innovation as essential for strengthening democracy and improving electoral services nationwide.
