UN Council to Vote on US-Backed Gaza Plan

The United Nations Security Council will on Monday vote on a U.S.-drafted resolution endorsing Donald Trump’s 20-point Gaza plan and authorising the deployment of an international stabilisation force in the Palestinian enclave.

The draft outlines the creation of a transitional governance body, known as the “Board of Peace”, which would oversee Gaza’s reconstruction and demilitarisation. Under the proposal, member states would be allowed to participate in the body, which forms a core element of the plan.

The vote is scheduled for 5 p.m. ET (2200 GMT). Support from the Palestinian Authority has strengthened the resolution’s prospects, though its passage may face resistance from veto-wielding Council members, including Russia and China.

Israeli officials have objected to the resolution because it references a possible future pathway to Palestinian statehood, a position strongly opposed by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Hamas, which still retains influence in the territory, condemned the proposal as a “dangerous step” toward foreign control of Gaza.

The resolution follows last month’s agreement between Israel and Hamas on the first phase of the Trump plan  a ceasefire and hostage-release arrangement — and is viewed as a necessary step to legitimise later stages involving governance and reconstruction.
