The United Arab Emirates has called for an immediate ceasefire in Sudan and urged a transition to civilian rule as the conflict between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) continues to devastate the country.
Anwar Gargash, diplomatic adviser to the UAE’s president, made the appeal on Wednesday during an interview at the Reuters NEXT Gulf Summit in Abu Dhabi, stressing that Sudan’s future should not be determined by a military junta.

Gargash said Sudan was currently not allowing the UAE to play a humanitarian role similar to its efforts in Gaza but expressed readiness to scale up assistance once permitted. The war, which began in April 2023, has plunged Sudan into one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises, with al-Fashir, the army’s last major stronghold in Darfur, emerging as the latest hotspot in the struggle for control.
The Sudanese army has accused the UAE of backing the RSF with advanced weapons and foreign fighters, allegations the Gulf nation has repeatedly denied. Tensions between both countries have worsened, with the UAE reportedly imposing an informal embargo on Sudanese gold, further straining the country’s fragile economy.
