U.S. President Donald Trump has announced plans to introduce a 100 per cent tariff on films produced abroad and imported into the United States, in a Bid to revive the U.S. Movie Industry.

Taking to his Truth Social platform, Trump claimed that America’s film industry was “dying a very fast death,” accusing foreign nations of enticing filmmakers and studios with generous incentives. “Hollywood, and many other areas within the U.S.A., are being devastated. he wrote.

“This is a concerted effort by other Nations and, therefore, a National Security threat,” Trump continued.

He described the trend as a deliberate strategy by other nations, branding it a “national security threat.”

To counter this, Trump said he had authorised the U.S. Department of Commerce and the United States Trade Representative to begin the process of implementing a 100 per cent tariff on all films produced outside the country.

“I am authorising the Department of Commerce, the United States Trade Representative, to begin the process of instituting a 100 per cent Tariff on all Movies coming into our Country that are produced in Foreign Lands.”

“We want movies made in America, again,” he declared.

However, it remains uncertain how these tariffs would be implemented, or what effect they might have on production expenses and consumer prices. Hollywood studios have increasingly chosen to film abroad, drawn by reduced production costs and favourable tax incentives provided by foreign governments.

In response to this trend, California Governor Gavin Newsom in 2024 proposed a substantial investment to boost the state’s competitiveness by enhancing tax credits and attracting more entertainment projects back to California.
