President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of renowned labour leader and rights activist, Comrade Abiodun Aremu, describing him as a fearless crusader who devoted his life to the defence of workers’ rights, social justice, and national progress.
In a condolence message issued by his spokesperson, Mr Bayo Onanuga, the President noted that Aremu’s intellectual depth, organisational acumen, and unwavering courage distinguished him as one of the most formidable voices in Nigeria’s pro-democracy and labour movements.
President Tinubu commiserated with the labour movement, civil society organisations, and the family of the late activist, who died on Sunday in Ota, Ogun State.
He described Aremu as a “committed fighter who dedicated his time, energy, and resources to empowering workers and advancing their rights,” adding that his lifelong pursuit of fairness and equality earned him the respect of allies and critics alike.
The President also extended his condolences to the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), and the wider civil society community on the loss of “one of their most steadfast partners in the struggle for a better life for all workers.”
“Aremu was a courageous comrade who remained resolute in his beliefs and never wavered in his defence of the oppressed,” the President said. “He was a teacher, an organiser, and a conscience of the people. He shaped minds and inspired generations of Nigerians with his commitment to integrity, justice, and patriotism. The nation has lost a selfless patriot and a tireless fighter for the common good,” he added.
President Tinubu prayed for the peaceful repose of Aremu’s soul and for divine strength and comfort for his family, friends, and associates during this period of grief.
