Eastern Slovakia Train Crash Leaves 20+ Injured

Two trains collided on Monday in eastern Slovakia, derailing an engine and a carriage and injuring at least 20 people, authorities and local media reported.

Police footage shared on Facebook showed mangled wreckage, with a locomotive and carriage off the tracks on the side of a hill, as paramedics attended to the injured.

Slovakia’s rescue service dispatched two helicopters and multiple ambulances to the scene. Local broadcaster TA3 reported that hospitals in the area had activated trauma plans to treat the injured.

No fatalities were reported immediately. Police said around 80 passengers were on board the trains at the time of the collision.

Slovak Railways stated that the crash occurred at a point where tracks converge into a single line. The cause of the collision is under investigation. “At this moment, the priority is the rescue and evacuation of our passengers and employees,” the company said.

The collision took place in front of a tunnel near Jablonov nad Turnou, roughly 55 km (34 miles) west of Košice, the main city in eastern Slovakia.
