Tinubu Launches New Committee for Tax Acts Implementation

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the creation of the National Tax Policy Implementation Committee (NTPIC), tasked with advancing the administration’s flagship tax reforms.

According to a statement issued by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Mr Bayo Onanuga, the committee chaired by Mr Joseph Tegbe, will lead the implementation of the government’s tax policy agenda in line with Nigeria’s economic objectives and public expectations. The Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr Wale Edun, is to supervise the committee’s activities.

The President stressed that delivering on the new Tax Acts is vital to Nigeria’s economic transformation and to strengthening public finance without undermining investor confidence or the interests of productive sectors.

“These new Tax Acts reflect our administration’s commitment to building a fair, transparent, and technology-driven tax system that supports economic growth while protecting the interests of citizens and businesses.

“The National Tax Policy Implementation Committee will ensure coherent, effective, and well-aligned implementation across all levels of government,” the President stated.

The committee’s mandate includes extensive engagements with stakeholders nationwide, covering the private sector, professional associations, and state governments, as well as public sensitisation campaigns to facilitate effective rollout of the new tax laws.

It is also expected to bolster inter-agency coordination by aligning revenue and regulatory institutions, harmonising existing systems with new statutes, and ensuring unified reporting and oversight throughout the transition.

Mr Tegbe, a Fellow of both the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (FCA) and the Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria (FCIT), brings over 35 years of combined public and private sector experience, including his previous role as Senior Partner and Head of Advisory Services at KPMG Africa. The Special Adviser to the President on Finance and Economy, Mrs Sanyade Okoli, will serve as Secretary. Other members include Ismaeel Ahmed, Rukaiya El Rufai, among others.

Tegbe affirmed the committee’s commitment to the task ahead, saying: “We understand the strategic importance of these Tax Acts. Our committee will work closely with all stakeholders to support the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy in ensuring seamless implementation and building public trust in the tax system.”

Mr Edun welcomed the establishment of the NTPIC, noting that the President had given the necessary authority and support “to reset not just the tax system but the entire fiscal policy framework of Government, to deliver significant economic growth for the benefit of all Nigerians.”

The committee is expected to improve revenue mobilisation, curb leakages, and deepen accountability as part of efforts to enhance fiscal sustainability and advance national development goals.
