Speed Darlington Under Investigation by NAPTIP

The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) on Wednesday announced that it had commenced an investigation into singer Speed Darlington, following the circulation of a controversial video in which he appeared to confess to a sexual encounter with a 15-year-old girl.

The video, which emerged on social media, sparked widespread outrage, with many condemning the singer for allegedly admitting to engaging in unlawful conduct involving a minor.

In a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter), NAPTIP confirmed that its Cybercrime Response Team had begun examining the viral video alongside other related content involving the singer.

“The NAPTIP Cybercrime Response Team has commenced investigations into the disturbing Instagram Live video and other videos produced by the same individual. At NAPTIP, we remain committed to a world in which children are safe and free from all forms of violence,” the agency stated

In response to the backlash, Speed Darlington claimed that his confession was entirely fictitious and intended solely for entertainment purposes. He stated that the fabricated story was part of a promotional strategy for his latest song, asserting: “I need controversy to eat.”

The Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA) initially addressed the issue, but noted that its jurisdiction was limited, as the precise location of the alleged incident had not been disclosed.

The agency subsequently referred the case to NAPTIP for further investigation.

A statement issued by the DSVA read: “The Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA) is aware of the disturbing video circulating online, in which a popular entertainer allegedly admits to engaging in unlawful sexual activity with a minor.

“While the individual did not specify the location of the alleged incident during the Instagram Live session, we must emphasise that the DSVA’s jurisdiction is confined to Lagos State.

“In light of this, and in line with our commitment to justice, we have referred the matter to the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP). @naptipnigeria.”
