The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has pledged to take firm action against illegal mining activities that are damaging railway tracks.
The Managing Director of the corporation, Mr Kayode Opeifa, issued the warning on Wednesday while speaking to journalists in Jebba during an inspection tour of the rail tracks in Mokwa, Niger State.

Mr Opeifa described the actions of the illegal miners as those of “economic saboteurs undermining national assets”.
“They don’t understand the implications of what they’re doing. They are damaging infrastructure entrusted to the Nigerian Railway Corporation,” he said.

“You can see the condition of the tracks from Jebba to Mokwa. Their activities have undermined the rail lines by burrowing into the soil beneath them.
“This is economic sabotage, and the government will take appropriate action.”
The NRC boss also called on the Niger State Government to deploy the relevant security agencies to curb the sabotage of national infrastructure.
