The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has formally inaugurated its Committee on the Performance Improvement Plan (PIP) under the Power Sector Recovery Operation (PSRO), aimed at enhancing the operational efficiency and financial viability of Nigeria’s power sector.

The PIP/PSRO initiative is a directive of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) and forms a key component of ongoing efforts to reform and stabilise the power sector. TCN, as a major stakeholder, plays a critical role in its successful implementation.

Speaking in Abuja during the inauguration, TCN’s Managing Director, Sule Ahmed-Abdulaziz, said the NERC Order mandates the establishment of a dedicated committee comprising relevant stakeholders to oversee the execution of projects under the initiative.

According to him, the programme seeks to identify and address operational challenges within the transmission network, boost the reliability of power supply, and reduce system losses.

“This can be achieved through improved maintenance practices, infrastructure upgrades, and better operational protocols,” he stated.

Ahmed-Abdulaziz also urged committee members to work collaboratively with stakeholders to ensure the efficient implementation, monitoring, and reporting of all PIP/PSRO-related projects.

“Their mandate aligns with the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) Order and the PSRO-AF Operation Manual,” he noted, highlighting TCN’s commitment to sector recovery and performance enhancement.

Also speaking at the event, the Executive Director, Transmission Service Provider, Olugbenga Ajiboye, said the plan was intended to set clear performance targets and indicators.

“The implementation of the PIP is to establish clear targets and performance indicators, thereby creating accountability among stakeholders, which will enable better governance and oversight,” Ajiboye stated.

The Committee Chairman and General Manager, Transmission Services, Ali Sharafai, assured TCN management of the committee’s dedication to meeting both national and international regulatory standards.

“We are committed to ensuring that TCN adheres to national and international standards, as well as regulatory requirements in addressing transmission challenges, thereby achieving a reliable and well-managed transmission system,” he said.

Sharafai added that the success of the programme would further position the sector to attract increased local and foreign investment.
