Governor of Oyo State, Seyi Makinde, on Tuesday received the Torch of Unity for the forthcoming National Sports Festival (NSF), reaffirming his administration’s commitment to the development of youth and sports.

The National Sports Festival, themed Gateway 2025 and set to be hosted by Ogun State, is scheduled to commence on Wednesday.

Governor Makinde, who was represented by his deputy, Bayo Lawal, received the torch from the representative of the National Sports Council, Ekeana Ibora.

He assured that his government would remain unwavering in its support for youth and sports development at all levels, stressing that these sectors are of paramount importance to his administration. He reiterated the state’s dedication to providing adequate infrastructure, training facilities, and an enabling environment for nurturing young talent.

The Governor emphasised that the state would continue to promote youth engagement and healthy competition through sports.

“Receiving the Torch of Unity in Oyo State is both an honour and a reaffirmation of our collective commitment to national cohesion and shared progress,” he said.

He further noted that the Torch of Unity symbolises more than a ceremonial gesture, describing it as a powerful emblem of peace, unity, and brotherhood across the 36 states of the federation.

Governor Makinde encouraged athletes representing Oyo State to uphold the values of sportsmanship and integrity, both on and off the field. He also pledged that the state government would recognise and reward athletes and officials who bring pride and honour to the state.

The National Sports Festival is scheduled to run from Wednesday until 24 May.
