President Alexander Stubb of Finland has begun a three-day state visit to Kenya, the first by a Finnish head of state to the East African nation.

On Monday, Presidents Stubb and William Ruto of Kenya oversaw the signing of two key agreements focused on political consultations, peace mediation, and conflict resolution.

At a joint press conference following bilateral talks, both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to the full implementation of the Kenya-European Union Economic Partnership Agreement, which took effect in July 2024.

Stubb praised Kenya’s role in promoting peace globally, citing the country’s consistent voice in international conflict resolution efforts.

“Whether it is Russia’s war of aggression in Ukraine or issues in the Middle East, Kenya has always been a pillar of peace. That’s why I’m especially pleased we’ve signed a memorandum of understanding on peace mediation,” he said.

Stubb also highlighted the importance of expanding economic ties, noting the presence of a large Finnish business delegation in Nairobi. “Driving business cooperation is a good way forward,” he added.

President Ruto, in his remarks, noted that Finland’s strengths in education, technology, renewable energy, and climate action align closely with Kenya’s national development goals.

The visit is expected to bolster diplomatic, economic, and development cooperation between the two countries.
