Popular Nigerian actress and filmmaker Funke Akindele has announced her intention to return to politics, declaring that her first experience in public service has only deepened her passion for governance and civic responsibility.

Akindele, who was the deputy governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Lagos State during the 2023 general elections, made the revelation during the live debut of the WithChude podcast, which aired recently. Reflecting on her brief but impactful stint in politics, the filmmaker said the journey had made her more confident and informed

“I needed to support others. I needed to give back—that was why I went into politics,” she said during the interview.

“Getting into it, seeing the violence, hearing the shouting, then I started watching female politicians, the way they speak and command respect and authority. And I said to myself, ‘Hey, you can do it.”

Although her 2023 campaign did not end in electoral victory, losing to incumbent Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Akindele described the experience as transformative and empowering.

“I stood; I spoke. I learned that you have to be bold, courageous, and strong. What will be, will be. Fear will only keep you stuck,” she stated.

The actress further revealed that her involvement in politics had pushed her to become more engaged with national and state issues.

“I started reading more, learning more about my country and my state. When I want to speak now, I speak with statistics—with data,” she said.

When asked whether she would consider returning to politics in the future, her response was clear: “So yes, I’m glad I went into politics. And if you ask me whether I’ll do it again? Oh yes!”

Although Akindele did not specify which political office she might contest next, her affirmation signals a continuing commitment to civic engagement and leadership beyond the entertainment industry.
