The National Sports Commission (NSC) has commended Team Nigeria’s dominant start at the 2025 Senior African Wrestling Championships in Casablanca, Morocco.

The Nigerian team secured four gold medals on the opening day of the competition.

In a statement issued on Sunday, the Director-General of the NSC, Bukola Olopade, described the feat as a major morale booster.

Despite the withdrawal of wrestler Mercy Adekuoroye due to illness, the remaining four athletes delivered exceptional performances, each claiming gold in their respective categories.

Christianah Ogunsanya (53kg), Esther Kolawole (62kg), Hannah Reuben (68kg), and Damola Ojo (76kg) all secured emphatic victories, placing Nigeria at the top of the medal table on Day One.

Ogunsanya set the pace with a dominant display, defeating Morocco’s Zineb Chabki 10-0 in the semi-finals before claiming gold.

Kolawole followed suit with an identical 10-0 victory over Senegal’s Safietou Goudialy in the final. Reuben delivered an 11-0 thrashing of Egypt’s Mariam Mesbah, while Ojo rounded off the evening with a confident win in the 76kg category.

Olopade expressed his satisfaction with the team’s showing and praised their determination and excellence.

“What our wrestlers are achieving in Casablanca is truly phenomenal. Securing four gold medals from four finals highlights Nigeria’s consistent strength in the sport of wrestling.

“We are immensely proud of the athletes, coaching staff, and the federation for this outstanding accomplishment,” he said.

The championships are set to conclude on Sunday at the Complexe Sportif Mohammed V in Casablanca, with Team Nigeria aiming to extend their impressive performance and retain their lead on the medal table.
