The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has introduced electric vehicles (EVs) for airside operations across the nation’s five international airports Lagos, Abuja, Kano, Port Harcourt, and Enugu marking a milestone in Nigeria’s aviation industry.
The initiative, the first of its kind in the country’s aviation sector, underscores NiMet’s commitment to environmental sustainability, innovation, and operational efficiency.
In a statement issued by the Agency’s spokesperson, Elioenai Anzizi, the project aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which prioritises clean energy, innovation, and climate resilience.
According to Anzizi, each airport will have dedicated EV charging stations, and the vehicles capable of covering up to 200 kilometres per charge will enhance NiMet’s airside operations.
“Beyond advancing environmental goals, the introduction of electric vehicles will significantly enhance NiMet’s operational services. The quiet and efficient EVs will facilitate smoother logistics, reduce downtime linked to fuel supply challenges, and cut operational costs,” Anzizi said.
He added that the move supports Nigeria’s national carbon credit targets while reinforcing NiMet’s alignment with global sustainability standards.
The agency credited the initiative to the leadership of Professor Charles Anosike, NiMet’s Director-General/CEO, who has continued to champion innovation and sustainability within the organisation.
“Under his leadership, NiMet continues to drive forward-thinking initiatives that modernise its operations and strengthen its role in promoting green growth and environmental responsibility within the aviation sector,” Anzizi stated.
