Nigeria has officially withdrawn from the 2025 World Athletics Relays in Guangzhou, China, citing prolonged visa delays that have rendered the country’s participation impossible.
In a statement released on Friday, the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) expressed deep frustration over the handling of the visa application process by Chinese authorities, despite initiating the process as early as February.
“With deep regret, we announce our withdrawal from the World Relays due to unacceptable delays in visa issuance by Chinese authorities,” the statement read. “Despite fulfilling all documentation requirements, our athletes encountered significant administrative obstacles, including last-minute embassy delays that made it physically impossible for the team to travel.”
The AFN highlighted the severe impact of the development, citing wasted training efforts, financial losses, missed qualification opportunities, and the emotional toll on the athletes.

The federation further criticised what it described as disorganised communication and bureaucratic inconsistencies. According to the AFN, the Chinese authorities failed to coordinate effectively with their embassies in Washington and Abuja, issued incorrect invitation letters, and repeatedly altered the visa application process.
Additionally, the AFN decried the demand for a special “Verification Letter of Invitation” a requirement that was poorly communicated and inconsistently enforced. Athletes and officials were also reportedly asked to submit police reports and personal bank statements.
“We stand by our decision to withdraw, as it became evident that our team was not being given a fair opportunity to compete,” the AFN said.
Team Nigeria, comprising nine women and eight men, was set to compete in four events: the men’s and women’s 4x100m, and the mixed 4x100m and 4x400m relays. The competition is scheduled to take place on Saturday and Sunday.
