Nigeria has secured a historic leadership position at the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) Council for the first time in nearly five decades, with the election of a Nigerian representative Dr. Bosun Tijani as Vice Chair of the ITU Council 2025.

Announcing the development on Monday, the newly elected Vice Chair Dr Bosun Tijani expressed gratitude to the ITU leadership and Member States for the trust placed in Nigeria, saying:
“It is a profound honour to be elected Vice Chair of the @ITU Council 2025. I thank the ITU leadership and Member States for this trust, and I look forward to working closely with the Council Chair Ms Cristiana Flutur and fellow Council members to advance our shared mission of inclusive digital development.”

Describing the appointment as coming at a critical juncture, Tijani noted that it is a time when global cooperation is vital for shaping a connected, secure, and sustainable digital future.
“Through this new responsibility, I will champion global collaboration around resilient infrastructure, meaningful access, digital literacy, cybersecurity, and trusted digital public infrastructure building on the progress we’re already making and helping shape digital policies that truly empower people everywhere,” the statement continued.
Tijani also expressed appreciation to Nigeria’s President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, for his formal endorsement ahead of the election, stating:
“I am grateful to His Excellency President @officialABAT, GCFR, for his formal endorsement ahead of my election to this position.”
He highlighted the alignment between Nigeria’s national priorities and the ITU’s global mission:
“From expanding connectivity in underserved areas to equipping young Nigerians with digital skills, our national priorities under Mr President’s Renewed Hope Agenda align strongly with the ITU’s vision of leaving no one behind in the digital revolution.”
He added that the new role offers an opportunity not only to strengthen Nigeria’s voice on the global stage but also to reinforce its domestic commitment to digital inclusion.
