Nigeria and The Gambia have reaffirmed their commitment to regional stability, democratic governance, and long-term development during a meeting between Nigeria’s officials and Hon. Sering Modou Njie, Gambia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs.
The discussions highlighted the depth of Nigeria–Gambia relations, reflecting on Nigeria’s support during The Gambia’s post-2017 transition, which has been cited as a key example of African countries standing together in critical moments to support democracy.

Topics included security cooperation, institutional continuity, and practical support that strengthens sovereignty, rather than fostering dependence. The meeting also focused on preparations for the next Nigeria–Gambia Joint Commission, scheduled for early 2026, which aims to translate political alignment into tangible outcomes in trade, defence, education, and people-to-people exchanges.
Officials emphasised that regional cooperation is strongest when deliberate, consistent, and based on mutual respect, with Nigeria reaffirming its role in advancing regional integration and democratic governance across West Africa.
