Nigeria has officially unveiled the ECOWAS National Biometric Identity Card (ENBIC), ending an 11-year stalemate and marking a major step forward for regional security and cross-border mobility.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration launched the card on Friday in a ceremony attended by government officials, diplomats, and security chiefs. The event, themed “ENBIC: Enhancing Regional Integration and Security,” highlighted the government’s push to modernize identity management and strengthen regional cooperation.
Minister of Interior Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo described the ENBIC as “a historic fulfillment of President Tinubu’s vision for smarter borders and safer communities.” He noted that while the project began more than a decade ago, it had suffered years of neglect until the Tinubu administration revived and completed it.
With Nigeria joining six other ECOWAS member states in deploying the chip-enabled biometric card, the region moves toward harmonized security systems and easier cross-border travel. The card stores fingerprints, photographs, and vital personal data, providing security agencies with tools to track criminals, combat irregular migration, and curb cross-border trafficking.
For millions of Nigerians, the ENBIC also promises greater convenience. Citizens traveling within ECOWAS countries will no longer need international passports, simplifying movement for traders, students, and small business owners.
Tunji-Ojo further revealed plans to integrate the card into the International Civil Aviation Organisation’s Public Key Directory, enabling instant verification at airports and land borders while enhancing security and streamlining clearance processes. The administration is also developing a regional migration database, modelled on Europe’s Schengen system, to consolidate intelligence and boost collective security.
Nigeria Immigration Service Comptroller-General Kemi Nandap called the launch “a game changer,” praising President Tinubu for achieving what many considered impossible. She noted the card’s benefits in improving travel safety, trade efficiency, tourism, and investment confidence.
The ENBIC positions Nigeria at the centre of ECOWAS integration and represents another milestone in the Tinubu administration’s efforts to modernize governance, strengthen national security, and reaffirm Nigeria’s leadership in West Africa.
