The Nigerian Electricity Management Services Agency (NEMSA) has entered into a formal partnership with the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN) to enhance regulation and improve standards in the country’s power sector.

Speaking at the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signing ceremony in Abuja, the Managing Director of NEMSA and Chief Electrical Inspector of the Federation, Engr. Aliyu Tukur Tahir, described the collaboration as a significant milestone. He said the partnership would help deliver on both agencies’ mandates, especially in promoting safety within the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI).

“This partnership will enable us to consolidate efforts in promoting professionalism, accountability, and competence in the power sector. By reinforcing COREN registration requirements for all individuals and firms applying for NEMSA certification, we are creating a framework that prioritises regulatory compliance and quality service delivery,” Tahir stated.

He explained that the agreement would also facilitate efficient information sharing between the two bodies, particularly on disciplinary matters involving certified personnel and firms. According to him, this would enhance transparency and enforcement of standards.

On renewable energy, Tahir noted that the partnership would support the development of skilled manpower and uphold quality assurance in certification processes. He added that COREN would also participate in NEMSA’s Competency Certification Panels, ensuring fairness and shared responsibility in engineering assessments.

In his remarks, COREN Registrar, Okorie Austine-Uche, assured stakeholders that the agreement would align power sector regulations with COREN’s statutory responsibilities. He said the MoU marked progress toward a more unified and effective regulatory environment.

COREN President, Engr. Sadiq Zubair-Abubakar, described the deal as a major step in COREN’s strategic repositioning.

“COREN recognises the enormity of its mandate and views collaboration as a critical strategy in addressing regulatory and operational gaps,” he said.

He added that COREN had already initiated implementation by inviting NEMSA to participate in key committees such as the Codes and Standards Committee, Engineering Regulation Monitoring Committee, Investigative Panel, and the Disciplinary Tribunal.

“NEMSA is expected to play a lead role in the tribunal,” he noted.

The partnership is expected to enhance service delivery and support NEMSA’s vision of ensuring safe, stable, and efficient electricity networks across Nigeria.
