Mexico defeated the United States 2-1 in a thrilling CONCACAF Gold Cup final at NRG Stadium in Houston on Sunday, securing their 10th title and successfully defending their crown.
The U.S. made an early breakthrough in the fourth minute when Sebastian Berhalter’s free-kick found Chris Richards, whose header hit the underside of the bar and crossed the line.
Mexico responded in the 27th minute through Raul Jimenez, who finished from close range to level the score. Jimenez dedicated the goal to his late former teammate, Diogo Jota, by holding up a shirt with the Portuguese player’s name.
“We came from behind and are leaving with the title,” Jimenez said. “It’s important to win this summer ahead of the World Cup.”
Despite dominating the first half, Mexico missed several chances. Roberto Alvarado and 16-year-old Gilberto Mora tested U.S. goalkeeper Matt Freese, who pulled off crucial saves to keep his side in the game.
The U.S. had opportunities of their own, with Alex Freeman’s header deflecting off Mexico keeper Luis Malagón and Diego Luna firing the rebound over the bar.
Mexico eventually found the winner in the second half when Edson Álvarez headed home following a corner. Although initially flagged for offside, VAR confirmed the goal, sparking celebrations from the Mexican bench.
“I’m speechless,” said Álvarez. “We spent 35 days in intense camp. There’s room to improve, but we’re proud of this result.”
Patrick Agyemang nearly equalised late on for the U.S., but his shot missed the target as Mexico held firm in the closing moments.
The win gives Mexico back-to-back Gold Cup victories and a record-extending 10th title. They have also won the competition’s predecessor, the CONCACAF Nations Championship, three times.
