Arsenal Sign Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad

Arsenal have secured the signing of defensive midfielder Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad on a long-term contract, the Premier League club announced on Sunday.

Financial terms were not disclosed, but reports indicate Zubimendi had a release clause of 60 million euros ($70.67 million) at Sociedad, where his contract runs until 2027.

The 26-year-old is Arsenal’s second signing this summer, following goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga, as manager Mikel Arteta seeks to reinforce a squad aiming to clinch the Premier League title after finishing second in the last three seasons.

Zubimendi expressed excitement about the move, saying, “This is a huge moment in my career. Arsenal’s style of play fits me well, and I believe the best is yet to come.”

The midfielder’s arrival addresses key departures in Arsenal’s midfield, with Jorginho and Thomas Partey leaving after their contracts expired last month.

Known for his mobility, defensive skills, and playmaking ability from deep positions, Zubimendi is expected to add strength and control to Arsenal’s midfield, potentially allowing star player Declan Rice to take a more advanced role alongside captain Martin Odegaard.

Internationally, Zubimendi helped Spain win the 2024 European Championship and recently scored in the Nations League final.

His early signing gives Arteta time to integrate him during pre-season before Arsenal face a challenging start to the Premier League campaign, including matches against Manchester United, Liverpool, Manchester City, and Newcastle United.
