The Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN) has reaffirmed its commitment to ongoing collaboration with the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) to ensure accurate calibration and standardisation that deliver value to consumers.

The Director-General of MAN, Mr Segun Ajayi-Kadir, made this known during the 2025 World Metrology Day celebration held in Lagos on Tuesday.

This year’s event, themed “Measurements for All Times, for All People”, underscored the enduring and universal significance of precise measurement across all sectors.

Ajayi-Kadir emphasised that measurement is far more than a technical function; it serves as a critical foundation for virtually all human activity. In the manufacturing sector, he noted, accurate measurement is indispensable for quality assurance, regulatory compliance, and product reliability.

He further stated that precise measurements enhance global competitiveness and foster consumer confidence in Nigerian-made products.

“Manufacturers increasingly rely on accurate measurement to reduce waste, meet customer expectations, and protect the environment,” he said.

He also highlighted the importance of standardisation in building consumer trust and aligning domestic practices with international standards.

Ajayi-Kadir commended SON for its dedication to advancing metrology in Nigeria and strengthening the nation’s quality infrastructure, noting that such efforts are vital to industrial growth and global market integration.

He reiterated MAN’s commitment to working closely with SON to promote precision, uphold standards, and drive continuous improvement across the manufacturing landscape.

Also speaking at the event, SON’s Director-General, Dr Ifeanyi Okeke, urged manufacturers to steer clear of unqualified calibration providers. He noted that SON is working alongside relevant authorities to eliminate substandard operators and preserve the integrity of calibration services.

Dr Okeke also revealed that SON is addressing the challenges faced by small businesses through training and awareness campaigns. Enforcing standards, he said, would not only raise product quality but also enhance national competitiveness.

“To support manufacturers, SON has decentralised calibration services to Lagos, Kano, Abuja, and Port Harcourt,” he said, explaining that this initiative provides businesses in various regions with improved access.

He further announced the launch of Mobile Calibration Services, also known as Grassroots Calibration Services, which brings metrology directly to small and remote enterprises, thereby promoting inclusive economic growth.

Dr Okeke affirmed SON’s role as the country’s lead agency for standards and metrology enforcement. He also revealed that a national metrology facility is being established in alignment with the Nigeria First Policy and the Renewed Hope Agenda, aimed at reducing capital flight and bolstering economic development.

“Our metrology institute in Enugu is being equipped with additional tools, upgraded infrastructure, and enhanced officer training,” he stated, adding that accredited laboratories will soon achieve full traceability within Nigeria, reducing reliance on foreign institutions.

Also present at the event was the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service, Bashir Adeniyi, represented by Commander Charles Obi. Adeniyi highlighted the economic relevance of measurement standards, especially in ensuring fair trade and accurate duty assessments.

He noted that the Customs Service engages with measurement standards daily, from container inspections to tariff calculations.

“Though invisible, measurement standards are fundamental to all visible trade and economic activities,” he remarked, adding that as Nigeria advances in industrialisation, metrology must remain central to quality control and production efficiency.
