Fifteen years after his death, the legacy of Umaru Musa Yar’Adua continues to resonate as a symbol of good leadership, peace, and accountability in Nigeria.
This reflection came from former President Goodluck Jonathan, who on May 5, 2025, paid tribute to his late boss and predecessor, Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, who passed away on the same date in 2010 while still serving as Nigeria’s President.
Jonathan, who served as Vice President under Yar’Adua, described him as a true patriot and servant leader, noting that his life epitomised selflessness, justice, and national unity.
“President Yar’Adua’s life was defined by service and selflessness. His account of stewardship, whether as a teacher, governor, or president, was guided by hard work, patriotism, accountability, and adherence to the rule of law,” Jonathan said in a statement.
Reflecting on Yar’Adua’s presidency, Jonathan pointed out that although his tenure was brief, it was marked by sincere efforts to reconcile Nigerians, foster unity, and promote an inclusive democracy founded on justice and equity.
“His tenure, although short, was impactful and progressive, a moment we remember for selfless service and deep commitment to the public good,” Jonathan added.
In his tribute, Jonathan expressed that he continues to celebrate Yar’Adua as both a friend and brother. He acknowledged the late president’s enduring dedication to nation-building, calling it an example that still guides Nigeria’s democratic journey.
The tribute from Jonathan serves as a reminder of Yar’Adua’s lasting influence on Nigeria’s leadership landscape, and his commitment to the values that continue to shape the nation’s growth and stability.
