Former US President Joe Biden has been diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer that has spread to his bones, according to a statement issued by his office on Sunday.
The 82-year-old received the diagnosis on Friday, following a consultation with a doctor the previous week after experiencing urinary symptoms.
The cancer has been described as an aggressive form of the disease, with a Gleason score of 9 out of 10.
According to Cancer Research UK, such a high score signifies a “high-grade” cancer, meaning the abnormal cells are likely to grow and spread rapidly.
Biden and his family are currently considering treatment options. His office added that the cancer is hormone-sensitive, which offers hope for effective management through therapy.
The diagnosis comes nearly a year after Biden withdrew from the 2024 US presidential race amid increasing concerns about his age and health.
He remains the oldest individual ever to have held the US Presidency.
The American Cancer Society estimates that in 2025, there will be approximately 313,780 new cases of prostate cancer in the United States.
