The second phase of joint Iranian-Chinese archaeological investigations has officially commenced in the historic village of Masouleh, northern Iran, with a focus on uncovering the ancient relationship between industrial activity and residential life in the area.

According to Tehran Times, a media partner of TV BRICS, the renewed research effort aims to advance understanding of ancient sponge iron smelting techniques and bolster Masouleh’s candidacy for inscription on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

This phase of the project seeks to complete critical documentation required for the global recognition of Masouleh’s cultural landscape. At its core, the research is examining how metallurgical technologies evolved and became embedded within the fabric of the settlement one of Iran’s most architecturally and historically distinctive villages.

Archaeologists are investigating the spatial and functional integration of historical iron-smelting zones into Masouleh’s built environment. The team hopes to reconstruct how industrial operations once coexisted with domestic life, offering insight into the village’s socioeconomic structure over the centuries.

The research combines targeted excavations at known metallurgical sites with analysis of historical texts including Islamic-era travelogues, ancient geographical records, and local archival materials to triangulate findings and enhance historical context.

To establish a reliable timeline, scientists will also employ advanced dating techniques such as radiocarbon (C-14) and luminescence testing.

Experts say the results of the study will be instrumental in strengthening Masouleh’s bid for World Heritage status, shedding new light on the historical interplay between industry and habitation in the region.
