Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has called for urgent federal support following a second fire outbreak at the renowned Singer Market in Kano metropolis.
The latest blaze, which occurred at the Gidan Gilas section, destroyed numerous shops and goods, disrupting economic activities in one of Northern Nigeria’s busiest trading hubs.
In a statement issued by his spokesperson, Sunusi Bature, the governor said he visited the scene and commended firefighters for their swift response.
“This repeated incident is a matter of national concern, given the strategic role of markets in sustaining livelihoods and supporting the informal economy,” he said, expressing sympathy with affected traders.
Governor Yusuf urged the Federal Government to equip fire services with modern tools, including aerial support and advanced emergency response equipment, to enhance disaster management not only in Kano but across other major commercial cities in the country.
“Upgrading fire service operations will significantly reduce losses from recurring market fires, which have affected several states in recent years,” he added.
The governor also praised the Kano State Fire Service and security agencies for their dedication in containing the blaze, noting that their efforts prevented further escalation.
He appealed to traders and residents to remain calm and cooperate with emergency responders as authorities assess the damage and restore normal operations.
