ECOWAS Unveils New Abuja Headquarters

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has unveiled its new headquarters complex in Abuja, a development which leaders underscored as a powerful symbol of the region’s commitment to integration, international cooperation, and sustainable development.

The modern facility, funded by the Government of China, was completed within two years after its groundbreaking in October 2023. It features multiple office blocks, a fully equipped conference centre, and a wide range of support amenities designed to enhance the Commission’s operations.

The ceremony, held in Abuja, brought together regional leaders, diplomats, and development partners, and coincided with ECOWAS’ 50th anniversary celebrations.

Speaking at handily over ceremony, the President of the ECOWAS Commission, Omar Alieu Touray, described the handover as a defining moment in the organisation’s history.

“Today marks an important day for ECOWAS, and we should all be glad to be witnesses to this momentous occasion. This new headquarters will serve as a fitting instrument to drive regional integration and foster enhanced peace and prosperity for all ECOWAS citizens. As we accept the keys to this new headquarters, we are reminded of the legacy of our founding fathers and our responsibility to build an even greater future”, he said

Touray expressed gratitude to Chinese President Xi Jinping for the support, noting that China remains a very strategic partner to West Africa.

The ECOWAS President also acknowledged the role of Nigeria’s President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and other officials for providing the support needed to deliver the project successfully.

Also speaking, Nigeria’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, emphasised that the new headquarters represents more than infrastructure; it represents a renewed commitment to unity and collective progress.

“This landmark event transcends the commissioning of a physical structure. It represents a reaffirmation of unity and a renewed commitment to the ideals of regional integration, peace, and sustainable development, ”she said

She emphasises that ECOWAS has grown into one of Africa’s most influential regional organisations, playing a crucial role in peacekeeping, democratic governance, and economic cooperation across West Africa. Noting that the organisation remains a key player on the African continent and globally.

“At a time when our region faces complex challenges, our unity is not optional; it is imperative,” she added

Odumegwu-Ojukwu also praised China’s contribution, describing it as:  “a powerful symbol of deepening ties between Africa and China, anchored on mutual respect and shared prosperity”, she added

On her part, the Minister of State for the Federal Capital Territory, FCT. Mariya Mahmoud Bunkure, described the building as a symbol of shared vision and collaboration.

Mahmoud Bunkure added that the structure sends a clear message that cooperation still matters and that diplomacy can deliver tangible outcomes, especially at a time of mounting regional challenges.

The new ECOWAS headquarters includes an 800-seat conference centre, meeting rooms equipped with interpretation systems, a clinic, daycare facilities, and parking space for more than 700 vehicles.

Speakers at the event stressed the importance of unity in addressing ongoing regional challenges such as insecurity, political transitions, and economic pressures, while describing the project as a lasting legacy and a symbol of hope for a more integrated and prosperous West Africa.

The facility is expected to be formally commissioned later in the year by the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, led by Sierra Leone’s President, Julius Maada Bio.
