Hundreds of Nigerians from diverse backgrounds took part in the 6th National Democracy Solidarity Walk 2025 on Thursday, with events held in Abuja and across all 36 states of the federation.

In Abuja, the walk commenced at Eagle Square and concluded at the Unity Fountain.

According to the organisers, the event was a demonstration of national unity and solidarity as Nigeria marks 25 years of uninterrupted democratic governance.

Dr Kletsaint Akor, Chairman of the National Democracy Stakeholders Group (NDSG), described the walk as a “civic audit” a non-partisan exercise in civil reflection on the promises, progress, and policy performance of the current administration.

“The people are the true scorecard of governance,” Akor stated. “Today, we stand united, with clarity and a shared sense of purpose.”

The walk brought together a diverse mix of participants, including civil society organisations, faith-based groups, traditional rulers, youth, and student associations. According to Dr Akor, this broad-based participation reinforces the walk’s central message of unity and collective resolve.

The event also marked the official unveiling of Nigeria Democracy Week 2025, scheduled to hold from 23 to 27 June. The week-long celebration will feature various activities aimed at deepening civic engagement, encouraging dialogue, and promoting democratic values.

Dr Akor noted that the National Democracy Solidarity Walk has become a long-standing tradition within Nigeria’s civic engagement space, offering citizens a peaceful platform for democratic introspection.

Since its inception in 2009, the walk has provided an avenue for Nigerians to reflect on the country’s democratic journey and to call for transparency and accountability in governance.

He added, “This walk serves as a call to action a reminder to government of its responsibility to the people and the need for continued progress. As we commemorate 25 years of unbroken democracy, today’s event affirms our steadfast commitment to democratic ideals and national cohesion.”
