British football legend David Beckham has been knighted by King Charles at Windsor Castle, recognising his exceptional contribution to sport and charitable causes over several decades.
The 50-year-old former England captain, who has long expressed deep admiration for the royal family, received the prestigious honour during an investiture ceremony on Tuesday more than 20 years after being awarded an OBE for his services to football.
Dressed in a tailored suit designed by his wife, fashion designer and former Spice Girls star Victoria Beckham, the new Sir David appeared emotional following the ceremony.
“It’s such a big moment for our family and it’s so special,” Beckham told reporters. “I grew up in a very humble background in the East End of London; I always wanted to be a professional footballer, and now I’m standing here at Windsor Castle. It doesn’t get any better.”
Beckham began his professional career at Manchester United in 1995, winning six Premier League titles, two FA Cups, and the UEFA Champions League before playing for Real Madrid, LA Galaxy, AC Milan, and Paris Saint-Germain.
He retired in 2013 after earning 115 England caps, becoming one of the most recognisable and commercially successful athletes of his era.
Beyond football, Beckham has fronted campaigns for major brands including Adidas, Armani, H&M, and Pepsi, and has served as a UNICEF goodwill ambassador since 2005. According to the 2025 Sunday Times Rich List, he and Victoria Beckham have a combined net worth of £500 million.

A self-described “huge royalist,” Beckham famously queued for over 12 hours in 2022 to pay his respects to the late Queen Elizabeth II as she lay in state. He also attended the weddings of both Prince William and Prince Harry.
His relationship with the monarchy has deepened in recent years. In 2024, he was appointed ambassador for the King’s Foundation, supporting education and sustainability initiatives interests he shares with the King himself.
Married since 1999, David and Victoria Beckham share four children and have spoken openly about their family life in recent Netflix documentaries. Reflecting on his life beyond the pitch, Beckham said his family remains his “greatest achievement.”
With his knighthood, Sir David Beckham joins a distinguished list of British sporting icons honoured for their contributions to the nation a recognition he describes as “the proudest moment of my life.”
