CHAN: Super Eagles B Squad List Set for Release Today

Super Eagles B coach Eric Chelle is expected to unveil his final squad for the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) today (Tuesday), following an intensive two-week training camp in Ikenne, Ogun State.

The rescheduled tournament, which features national teams made up solely of home-based players, will take place from August 2 to 30 across Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda.

Sources from the team camp confirm that the final list of players will be drawn after a final test match today, marking the end of the team’s preparations before they depart for the tournament.

Chelle had initially called up 35 players to the provisional camp, but the number has since reduced. Five players Papa Daniel Mustapha, Waliu Ojetoye, Savour Isaac, Abubakar Sadiq, and Philip Adejo were dropped after completing transfers abroad, rendering them ineligible. Ifeanyi Onyebuchi of Rangers International was also ruled out due to injury.

With competition heating up, players have acknowledged the intense pressure to make the final cut.

“Everyone is under pressure, but the coaches are looking for the very best,” said Junior Nduka, the team’s captain during the qualifying rounds.

Aniekeme Okon, a former Flying Eagles and Rivers United striker, added: “We’re all giving 100 percent. Everyone wants to be on that list, so we keep pushing.”

Nigeria has been drawn in Group D alongside defending champions Senegal, Sudan, and Congo in the 19-team tournament.

The Super Eagles B will kick off their campaign against Senegal and Sudan at the Amman Stadium in Zanzibar, before wrapping up the group stage against Congo at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium in Dar es Salaam.

Despite reaching the final in 2018 and finishing third in 2014, Nigeria is yet to lift the CHAN trophy a record that Chelle and his squad will be keen to change this year.
