Governor Bassey Otu on Sunday officially flagged off the first dry run ahead of the 2025 edition of Carnival Calabar, Africa’s largest street party.

The roadshow, stretching along the 12-kilometre carnival route, offered a preview of the festivities as seven competing bands prepare to contest for the coveted “best overall” title. Carnival Calabar, formally introduced in 2024 by former Governor Donald Duke, has become a hallmark of culture, unity, and creativity in Nigeria.

At Millennium Park, Governor Otu expressed optimism that this year’s carnival would surpass previous editions in vibrancy and excitement. He described the dry run as a historic convergence of reconciliation, cultural revival, and global attraction.

“I feel very excited and so glad that this coincidence has happened. Like the Bible says, all things work together for good for those who trust in the Lord,” Otu said. “God knew why He made it so, that today we are not only celebrating reconciliation and unity, but also marking the 20th anniversary of the Calabar Carnival.”

The governor unveiled the theme for the 2025 carnival, ‘Traces of Time’, inviting tourists, guests, and Nigerians worldwide to partake in the festivities. “The theme captures our journey through culture, creativity, and transformation. You will see your heritage beautifully displayed right here in Calabar, the home of culture and heritage,” Otu explained.

He praised the organisers, band leaders, and stakeholders for sustaining the Carnival Calabar brand for two decades, urging full participation. “We have the biggest street party right here in Calabar. Let the world know that the ‘Season of Sweetness’ is not just about governance; it is also about joy, culture, and unity. Everyone must come and participate,” the governor added.

The rehearsal drew members of the National Assembly, representatives of other state governments, traditional rulers, industry captains, and members of the diaspora, all donning colourful attire to celebrate the cultural spectacle.

The seven competing bands, each with distinct colour identities, include:

Bayside – all blue, Freedom – yellow, Passion 4 – green, Masta Blasta – orange, Seagull – red, Diamond – purple, Class Vegas – gold

The bands will compete across categories such as best dressed king and queen, best carnival spirit, best band on the move, and best overall band.

The 2025 Carnival Calabar Festival promises an exciting blend of culture, heritage, and entertainment, solidifying Calabar’s position as the hub of Nigeria’s premier street carnival.
