Apple is in early discussions to use Google’s Gemini AI to revamp its Siri voice assistant, Bloomberg News reported on Friday, citing people familiar with the matter.
Following the report, Alphabet’s shares climbed 3.7% and Apple’s stock rose 1.6%, extending earlier gains in afternoon trading.
According to Bloomberg, Apple recently approached Google about developing a custom AI model to power a redesigned Siri expected next year.
Apple is still weeks away from deciding whether to continue with its in-house Siri models or switch to an external partner, and no final decision has yet been made.
Google declined to comment on the report, while Apple did not respond to requests for comment.
The iPhone maker has lagged behind rivals such as Google and Samsung (005930.KS) in rolling out generative AI features, which competitors have rapidly integrated across devices through advanced assistants and models.
The potential shift comes after delays to a long-promised Siri overhaul, which aims to perform tasks using personal context and enable full voice-based device control. That upgrade, originally scheduled for release last spring, was postponed by a year due to engineering challenges.
Historically, Siri has been less capable than Amazon’s Alexa and Google Assistant in handling complex, multi-step requests and integrating with third-party apps.
Earlier this year, Apple also explored possible partnerships with Anthropic and OpenAI, considering whether Claude or ChatGPT could power a redesigned version of Siri, Bloomberg previously reported.
