Anthony Joshua to Undergo Elbow Surgery

British-Nigerian heavyweight boxer Anthony Joshua is set to undergo elbow surgery later this month, a move that will sideline him from training for approximately six to eight weeks and delay his return to competitive action.

The former unified world champion announced during an interview with DAZN at the recent Canelo Alvarez vs. William Scull bout in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. “I’m trying to get my body right. I’ve got to actually have a little surgery on my elbow… That will see me out of the gym for maybe six to eight weeks, and then when I’m healed, I will be back,” Joshua said.

The procedure comes as a response to a lingering injury that has affected his training regime, particularly impairing his ability to punch with full power. The development has cast uncertainty over initial plans for a summer comeback, with Matchroom Boxing’s Eddie Hearn previously indicating a June or July return.

Joshua’s last bout ended in a knockout loss to fellow Briton Daniel Dubois in September 2024, a result that further fuelled speculation about a future blockbuster clash with Tyson Fury. Fury, who had earlier announced his retirement, has recently been spotted training with long-time coach SugarHill Steward—stirring talk of a possible return to the ring.

While a date for Joshua’s next fight remains unclear, the surgery represents a temporary setback in his pursuit of redemption and heavyweight supremacy. His team has not confirmed a revised timeline for his return, but fans and pundits alike will be closely watching his recovery and any updates regarding a potential bout with Fury.

Joshua’s resilience and determination have been a hallmark of his career, and many hope the elbow procedure will restore him to peak condition for the challenges ahead.
