Students of St. John Vianney Science College, Ukwulu, Anambra State, have emerged as overall winners of the maiden edition of the UK-Nigeria Virtual Debate Championship.

The Nigerian contingent included Britarch Schools, Sure Start School, Abuja, St. Augustine’s College, Jos, and St. John Vianney Science College, Anambra, while the United Kingdom was represented by Central Foundation Girls’ School, Maghull High School, and Shireland High School.

The debate, held virtually on Thursday, was jointly organised by Bring-It-On Africa and Debate Mate UK, with the aim of promoting cross-cultural exchange while enhancing students’ critical thinking, reasoning, and oratory skills.

In a congratulatory message issued on Saturday in Awka, the wife of the Anambra State Governor, Dr Nonye Soludo, praised the students for raising the profile of Anambra on the global stage.

Dr Soludo, who is also the founder of the Healthy Living Initiative, said their success was a reflection of the state’s deep investment in education and human capital development.

“Our home is the moulding ground for exceptional talents and record setters who are tapping greatly from the abundant opportunities that the present administration is offering,” she said.

“Our great students have shown, once again, that education lives in the core of Anambra’s most cherished dream.

“It is a philosophy that the present administration clearly understands and is constantly investing in to achieve the kind of result that we’re just celebrating.”

She also extended her appreciation to the staff and management of St. John Vianney Science College for their dedication to the academic and personal development of their students.

“Thank you for exposing our students to life-changing academic and personal engagements that will help them to prosper in their chosen fields in the future,” she added.

The Anambra students who represented the school in the competition were Chibueze Jennifer, Catherine Obiokafor, Benjamin Eneoli, and Valentine Onwuegbusi, under the guidance of their mentor, Mr John Onuigbo.
