The Abia State Government is set to benefit from the European Union’s Solar for Health project, a €2 million initiative designed to provide solar power to health facilities across six Nigerian states.
The state’s Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, disclosed during the State Executive Council meeting at Government House, Umuahia, that Abia will contribute €624,000 towards the implementation of the project.
He noted that the Solar for Health initiative, which seeks to enhance healthcare delivery through renewable energy solutions, will be officially launched in Abia next week.
Prince Kanu also revealed that the state has signed a six-point Memorandum of Understanding with a major telecommunications company to position Abia as a leading digital hub in Africa. The agreement targets 100% broadband coverage and includes the development of digital infrastructure, a digital mall for SMEs, device acquisition schemes for civil servants, the rollout of 4G/5G technology, and the establishment of a state-run digital marketplace.

Speaking on the sustainability of the solar project, Commissioner for Power, Mr Ikechukwu Monday, affirmed the government’s commitment to long-term energy solutions.
In a related development, the General Manager of the Abia State Environmental Protection Agency, Mr Ogbonnia Okereke, announced a new biogas initiative aimed at promoting safer meat processing practices at the Lokpanta market by phasing out the hazardous use of burning tyres.
